Community Projects Since its beginning, Kollelites have become responsibly involved in community activities. The Kollel is unique because it remain true to its authentic sources, and because its implicit mandate is to teach its student to teach. Through the magnification of academic leverage, it is effective the most and most historically intact and precious Judaic teachings to it community and beyond. Although the Kollel is involved in all aspects of Jewish life in Toronto, its main focus in on concentrated study and research. Accordingly, it has produced a multitude of educators and leaders for the community at large. The Kollel is not just for the intellectual elite (altough it does provide the challenge necessary to nuture the minds of those so blessed), but views, as part of its mandate, the intimate participation in community affairs, enthocultural activities and heritage projects. Seniors, young couples, former yeshiva students, and newcomers to Toronto are but a sampling of those groups having benefitted from the Kollel's outlook on the community it anchors. It is a resource center open to, and used regularly by the public regardless of affiliation, race, or sex. Development of Educators and Communty Rabbis: Over the last decade or so, more than scholars from the Kollel have gone on to various teaching positions in schools and seminaries in Ontario alone. At least four graduates have become community rabbis in local synagogues. In some some of of these cases, the synagogues were themselves established with the aid of the Kollel to serve the needs of of growing communities that lacked religious and cultural centers. Other schools and educational programs have been founded by members of Kollel members. Some members serve in major Jewish institutions such as COR (Kosher Certification) within the Vaad HaRabbonim. The deans of the Kollel sit on the boards of Jewish Family and Child Services, Bais Yaacov Elementary School, Beth Jacob High School, and Yeshiva Yesodei HaTorah. Some members also belong to the board of the benevolent society. Services to Seniors: The Kollel runs a daily lunch program of lectures and a social integration program for seniors. Approximately 40 seniors are regular attendees of this program. For many of them, this is their main avenue for social interaction and a highlight of their day. This program is especially helpful to seniors with language barriers, who therefore appreciate the multilingual service the Kollel provides.
